Cubs (8-10½)
‘The best part of Scouting is definitely the camps. I love every activity we do!’
Scouting is one of the great success stories of the last 100 years. From an experimental camp for 20 boys on Brownsea island in 1907, it has spread to 216 countries and territories, with an estimated 28 million members.
Cubs is the third section of the Scouting movement, originally started in 1916 for younger brothers who wanted a ‘look-in’. In nearly a century, the section has constantly evolved and adapted its programme and methods to meet the changing needs of each generation of young people, and these days admits girls as well as boys.
Activities
During their time in the Pack, Cub Scouts will get a chance to try lots of different activities like camping, music, exploring, computing and collecting. There are a range of badges available which Cub Scouts can wear on their uniforms to show everyone how well they’re doing.
Cub Scouts also get to go on trips and days out, to places like the zoo, theme parks, ice skating or a farm. They’ll definitely be able to go camping with the rest of the Pack and take part in all kinds of outdoor activities.
Watch our video to take a look at some of the activities our Cub Scouts have done over the last couple of years.
Joining
Cub Scouts can join from their eighth birthday. Although we have three Cub Packs we are still oversubscribed in our Phoenix Pack (Monday) and have a joining list for those not already members of the Group. We started a third Pack in September 2014 to meet demand.
We recommend adding your child to the list as soon as possible as we allocate available places on a first come first served basis. Preference is given to current 1st Holgate Beavers. We encourage you to add all your children and their friends!!
To add your child to the joining list please use our Cubs joining form.
Structure and Organisation
A Pack of Cub Scouts is organised into Sixes, with each Six named after a colour, and a Sixer and a Seconder in charge. At 1st Holgate we have three Packs:
Phoenix – Mondays 6.30 – 8.15
Pegasus – Wednesday 6.15 – 8.00 (at Acomb Primary School)
Griffin – Fridays 5.45 – 7.30
Cubs take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. A Cub Scout meeting consists of games and activities with plenty of time spent outdoors. Camps and holidays are some of the most memorable events of the year for Cubs.
The Cub Scout Law
